snow days, '76 - '89
cold dark mornings never silent
radio cheery listing schools closed
in alphabetical order, I always wished
that I went to Aardvark Elementary
(though I invariably tuned in
one letter after mine anyway)

strange how breakfast came
more often on days when I didn't need as much
father usually returning from night shift
(he could drive through any weather)
making french toast
with whatever bread we had
(except maybe not garlic)
did mom even get up?

playing with legos
making houses, cars, streets, stores
someday I'll grow up
and buy, drive, work

no snow days here in the desert
luckily we have servers that go down
and I'm playing with legos
on my laptop
someday I'll grow up
and no longer enjoy snow days.
